Wondering how to check if your phone is tapped and what signs to look for? Then, you’re in the right place because I’ll provide possible indicators of being tapped and how to check it on Android.

With more and more stories of our phones being spied on, it’s good to know if your cellphone is tapped, so stay tuned.

Signs Your Phone is Tapped

While not always easy to spot, some things can indicate that your phone is tapped. The following are some easy ways to know if your phone has been tapped;

  • Unknown Apps and Ads

You have to be aware of everything on your phone, particularly the applications that are operating in the background. They might be harmful if you haven’t installed them.

  • Battery Quickly Draining

If your phone’s battery is draining quicker than usual, that could be due to activity when you aren’t using the phone.

  • Overheating

Overheating is another red flag to watch out for if you suspect that your phone is being tapped. Overheating occurs mainly because of apps working in the background, whether you’re using the phone or not. There are programs that you can use to find out which apps are working in the background and causing your phone to overheat.

  • Increase in Data Usage

One of the reasons why data usage increases when a phone is tapped is because signals are being sent and received via wifi or your phone’s data, which is the cause of the unusual increase in data usage even when you aren’t using your phone. Your mobile bill can be higher due to more activity.

  • Device Is Suddenly Slow

While nowadays phones are being built with a lot of RAM, having multiple apps and programs running in the background can cause the phone to slow down or freeze while doing something. If your phone is suddenly working slower than usual, it’s time to find out why.

  • Noises During Calls

The background noise that one hears when calling someone or receiving a call is because of static that can indicate a faulty connection, which is expected during bad weather, or it can also be a sign that your phone is tapped.

  • Messages and Calls from Unknown Numbers

Sometimes you can even receive messages made up of random digits or messages from unknown numbers, which may seem odd at first, but it’s important to ignore such messages because they are mostly caused by spyware.

How to Check if Your Phone Is Tapped?

There’re different ways to find out if your phone is being tapped or not. The following are some ways you can test your phone to make sure that you’re not being spied on:

Check Data Usage

On Android:

  • Go to Settings
  • Click on Connection & Sharing
  • Find and press Data Usage

On iPhones:

  • Go to Settings
  • Press Cellular
  • Scroll down to see more information

Check Battery Usage

On Android and iPhone:

  • Go to Settings
  • Click on Battery
  • Scroll down to see the graph and which apps use the battery the most.

What to Do If Your Phone Is Tapped?

You can download and install an antivirus app from the Google Play Store or Apple Store and run a scan on your phone to find out if there’s indeed any spyware installed on your device.

Of course, that’s not the only step Android and iOS users can take.

On Androids

To see if your android phone is tapped, follow the steps:

  • Dial *#21*, *#67#, or *#62# to double-check that your call, SMS, and data aren’t forwarded.
  • If you see forwarded, enter ##002#
  • It should show “Erasure successful.”

If that doesn’t work, here is the next step:

  • Turn on an airplane mode
  • Uninstall unknown apps
  • Reboot to safe mode
  • Factory reset (if the issues still continue)

On iPhones

Malware seldom affects iPhones because Apple ensures that third-party apps aren’t installed on its devices. Secondly, unlike Android or Windows users, Apple customers download the program directly from the App Store, ensuring that it’s virus-free before being downloaded to your iPhone.

Namely, iOS is a closed operating system, meaning that Apple doesn’t make its source code available to app developers. Also, iPhone and iPad consumers cannot readily edit the code on their devices which makes finding vulnerabilities on iOS devices more difficult for hackers.

Importance of Security

Maintaining the security of the data becomes increasingly important since you store more sensitive information on them. Cybercriminals who attack your phone can get access to our phones and all the personal information in them, from images and credit card information and even the phone numbers of your contacts stored on your phone. The good news is that it’s possible to increase the security of your smartphone:

  • Download from legitimate sources

You should always make sure to download apps from legitimate sources, preferably via the Google Play Store or the Apple Store, depending on the device you’re using.

  • Pay Attention When Giving Permissions to Apps

Many apps ask for permissions that would otherwise be intrusive. Also, some apps may ask for access to your address book, messages, pictures, and camera.

  • Don’t click on links in suspicious SMS and emails

One of the easiest ways for phones to get infected by spyware is when users click on suspicious links, which they receive via email or SMS. Therefore, never click on any SMS or email that you don’t recognise.

What’s also the good news is that with Android 10 and higher, you have the option to allow an app to access some data/function only when you’re actively using it, which offers an extra layer of protection.

So, now that I’ve gone through how to check if your phone is tapped and what signs to look for, you should go ahead and check your phone to see if your device’s security is up to date and there’s no spyware installed on your phone.
